Biography of Senator Shuaibu Isa Lau

Senator Shuaibu Isa Lau is a Nigerian politician, businessman, and public servant who represents Taraba North Senatorial District in the 10th Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. He is a member of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and has represented Taraba North in the Senate since 2017.

Shuaibu Isa Lau was born on 27 November 1960 in Lau Local Government Area of Taraba State. He began his early education at Local Education Authority Primary School, Lau, before attending General Murtala Muhammed College, Yola, where he obtained his secondary-school education.

He subsequently attended Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, where he studied engineering and obtained a bachelor's degree. His academic background, together with his professional experience, provided a foundation for his later involvement in business, public affairs, and politics.

Before entering elective politics, Lau developed experience in business and public affairs. His professional activities exposed him to administration, management, economic matters, and community development.

Lau became actively involved in politics and contested for the Taraba North Senatorial District seat under the PDP. Although he initially lost the seat in the 2015 election, he challenged the result through the courts. In June 2017, the Supreme Court ruled in his favour, after which he was sworn into the 8th Senate.

In the 2019 general elections, Lau was re-elected to represent Taraba North. He secured another term in the 2023 general elections, making him a member of the 8th, 9th, and 10th National Assemblies.

During the 9th Senate, Lau served as Chairman of the Senate Committee on Public Procurement. His responsibilities included legislative oversight of public procurement processes and related government institutions.

He also served as Deputy Senate Minority Leader from 2022, giving him a prominent position within the Senate's opposition leadership.

In the 10th Senate, Lau has continued to participate in legislative debates, committee activities, oversight functions, and policy discussions. His legislative interests have included public procurement, infrastructure, education, agriculture, security, youth empowerment, economic development, and rural development.

As a representative of Taraba North, he has also focused on constituency development. His constituency-related activities have included interventions involving education, healthcare, youth empowerment, electricity, infrastructure, and support for vulnerable communities.

Lau has maintained strong connections with communities across Taraba North and has engaged traditional rulers, community leaders, youth organisations, and other stakeholders on issues affecting the senatorial district.
