Biography of Alhaji Mukhtar Ramalan Yero

Alhaji Mukhtar Ramalan Yero is a Nigerian accountant, politician, and public administrator who served as the Governor of Kaduna State from 2012 to 2015. Before becoming governor, he served as Deputy Governor of Kaduna State from 2010 to 2012 and as Commissioner for Finance from 2007 to 2010. The Kaduna State Government lists him among the state's former governors.

Mukhtar Ramalan Yero was born on 1 May 1968 in Agwan Kaura, Zaria, Kaduna State. He began his early education at LEA Primary School, Kaura, and later attended Government Secondary School, Ikara, and Government Day Secondary School, Zaria, completing his secondary education in 1986. He proceeded to Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, where he obtained a Diploma in Banking, a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting, and later a Master's degree in Business Administration (MBA).

Yero began his professional career during his National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) programme, working as an assistant accountant with the Ogun State Purchasing Corporation between 1991 and 1992. He subsequently worked in the Bursary Department of Ahmadu Bello University and later joined the Nigerian Universal Bank Limited, where he served as an accountant supervisor. In 1997, he joined Nalado Nigeria Limited, where he rose to become Director of Finance and Administration before entering government service.

His political career became prominent in 2007, when he was appointed Commissioner for Finance in Kaduna State by Governor Namadi Sambo. He served in that position until 2010. Following Namadi Sambo's elevation to the position of Vice President of Nigeria and the succession of Patrick Ibrahim Yakowa as Kaduna State Governor, Yero was appointed Deputy Governor of Kaduna State in May 2010.

On 16 December 2012, Mukhtar Ramalan Yero became the Governor of Kaduna State following the death of Governor Patrick Yakowa in a helicopter crash. His assumption of office made him the eighth civilian governor of Kaduna State. During his tenure, his administration focused on governance, peacebuilding, public administration, and addressing the security and developmental challenges facing the state.

Yero contested for a second term as governor in the 2015 governorship election under the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) but was defeated by Nasir Ahmad El-Rufai of the All Progressives Congress. He subsequently left the Kaduna State governorship after completing his tenure on 29 May 2015.

Beyond his political career, Yero has maintained an interest in community and educational development. His public-service background combines professional experience in accounting and finance with extensive experience in government administration. He has also been associated with initiatives and organizations concerned with education and community development in Kaduna State.

Through his professional career in accounting, his service as Commissioner of Finance and Deputy Governor, and his tenure as Governor of Kaduna State, Alhaji Mukhtar Ramalan Yero has played a significant role in the political and administrative history of Kaduna State.
