Kebbi | House of representatives
Mallam Ja’afaru Ahmed Jega is a Nigerian public servant, retired corrections administrator and politician from Kebbi State. He was born on 21 July 1959 in Jega Local Government Area of Kebbi State. Over the course of his career, he rose through the Nigerian correctional service system to become Controller-General of the Nigeria Correctional Service, giving him extensive experience in public administration, corrections management and national security-related affairs.
Ja’afaru Ahmed began his education in Kebbi State. He attended Nasarawa Primary School, Birnin Kebbi, where he obtained his First School Leaving Certificate, and later attended Government Secondary School, Birnin Kebbi, where he obtained his West African School Certificate. He subsequently attended the College of Arts and Science, Sokoto, before proceeding to Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, where he obtained a Bachelor of Arts degree in History in 1984.
He built his professional career within Nigeria's correctional administration, taking on increasing responsibilities within the service before eventually becoming its head. As Controller-General of the Nigerian Prisons Service, later renamed the Nigeria Correctional Service, he was involved in reforms and infrastructure development within the correctional system. Among the projects associated with his tenure was the development of new custodial facilities, including plans for 3,000-capacity custodial centres across the six geopolitical zones.
Following his retirement from the correctional service, Ja’afaru Ahmed continued to serve the Federal Government in an administrative capacity. In April 2023, he was appointed Secretary of the Civil Defence, Correctional, Fire and Immigration Services Board (CDCFIB). The appointment placed him in a senior administrative position overseeing matters connected with agencies under the Ministry of Interior.
Ahmed's transition into partisan politics brought his public-service experience into electoral politics in Kebbi State. In 2026, he emerged as the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate for the Jega/Gwandu/Aleiro Federal Constituency for the 2027 House of Representatives election. His emergence followed a consensus arrangement in which the incumbent lawmaker, Mansur Musa Jega, did not secure the party's return ticket.
His 2027 candidacy therefore represents a move from a long career in federal public administration and correctional service into elective politics. If elected, Ja’afaru Ahmed Jega would bring his decades of government and institutional-management experience to the representation of the people of Jega, Gwandu and Aleiro in the House of Representatives.
