Biography of Mai Mala Buni

Mai Mala Buni is a Nigerian politician, administrator, and public servant from Yobe State. He is a prominent member of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and has served as the Governor of Yobe State.

Mai Mala Buni was born on 19 November 1967 in Buni Yadi, Gujba Local Government Area of Yobe State. He began his early education in Yobe State before pursuing higher education and professional training.

He studied International Relations at the University of Maiduguri and later obtained further qualifications in business administration and management. His academic background provided him with knowledge of international affairs, administration, and organisational management.

Before becoming governor, Buni developed experience in business and politics. He was involved in private-sector activities and gradually became active in partisan politics, particularly within the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP) and later the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Buni played an important role in the development of the APC. Following the formation of the party through the merger of several political parties, he became involved in its organisational structure and grassroots mobilisation.

In 2018, Buni became the National Secretary of the APC. He was responsible for important administrative and organisational duties within the party and became one of its prominent national figures.

In 2020, Buni was appointed Chairman of the APC Caretaker/Extraordinary Convention Planning Committee (CECPC). He was given the responsibility of reorganising the party and overseeing its affairs during a period of internal challenges.

Under his leadership, the committee worked toward strengthening the party's structures across the country and eventually organised the party's national convention in 2022.

Buni's political career reached another major stage when he contested the Yobe State governorship election. In the 2019 general elections, he was elected Governor of Yobe State under the platform of the APC.

He was sworn in as governor on 29 May 2019, succeeding Ibrahim Gaidam. His administration focused on education, healthcare, infrastructure, agriculture, security, youth empowerment, and economic development.

Buni was re-elected as Governor of Yobe State in the 2023 general elections for a second term. His administration has continued to implement development programmes across the state, with particular attention to rebuilding communities affected by insecurity and improving public infrastructure.

Education has remained an important area of his administration. His government has invested in educational infrastructure, teacher development, scholarships, and initiatives aimed at improving access to education for children and young people.

His administration has also placed emphasis on healthcare development, including the construction and rehabilitation of healthcare facilities and programmes intended to improve access to medical services across the state.

Agriculture is another major area of focus because of its importance to Yobe's economy and rural population. His government has supported farmers and promoted agricultural development as a means of improving livelihoods and strengthening food production.

Security and reconstruction have also been major priorities during his tenure. Yobe State has experienced significant security challenges, and his administration has worked with federal security agencies and communities to support peace, reconstruction, and the return of displaced residents.

Buni has also supported youth and women's empowerment programmes, including skills acquisition, entrepreneurship initiatives, and other interventions aimed at increasing economic opportunities.

Beyond his responsibilities as governor, Buni remains an influential figure within the APC and Nigerian politics. His previous experience as the party's national secretary and caretaker committee chairman has given him considerable experience in national political organisation.

Through his career as a politician, administrator, businessman, party leader, and governor, Mai Mala Buni has established himself as a prominent political figure from Yobe State. His public career has particularly focused on education, healthcare, infrastructure, agriculture, security, youth empowerment, party organisation, and socioeconomic development.
