Cross river | House of representatives
Hon. John Gaul Lebo is a Nigerian lawyer, politician and former legislator from Cross River State. He was born on 15 March 1972 and hails from Adadama in Abi Local Government Area of Cross River State. He is particularly known for his service in the Cross River State House of Assembly, where he represented Abi State Constituency.
Lebo studied law at the University of Calabar and obtained his LL.B degree in 1996. He was called to the Nigerian Bar in 1998 and became a Barrister and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Nigeria. He has also undertaken further professional studies in business management, strategic planning, arbitration and international economic law.
Before entering elective politics, Lebo worked in the legal profession and was involved in legal education and law reporting. He lectured in law at the University of Abuja and served as Managing Editor of the Law Reports of Nigeria. He also participated in legal and public-sector activities in Cross River State.
In 2011, Lebo was elected to the Cross River State House of Assembly to represent Abi State Constituency. He was re-elected in 2015 and subsequently elected Speaker of the House on 10 June 2015. During his tenure, he was involved in legislative activities covering law reform, infrastructure, education, security and community development.
As Speaker, Lebo supported several legislative initiatives and sponsored private-member bills relating to areas such as agriculture, education and infrastructure. His constituency activities also included scholarships for students from Abi and skills-development programmes for young people.
Lebo also represented Cross River State at a number of national and international parliamentary and governmental forums. In 2017, he participated in the World Government Summit in Dubai and was recognised with the Nnamdi Azikiwe Zik Prize for leadership in state legislature.
After leaving the Cross River State House of Assembly in 2019, Lebo continued his involvement in legal, political and public affairs. In May 2024, he announced his departure from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the party under which he had previously served in the state legislature.
John Gaul Lebo's career spans law, education, legislative service and public administration. His tenure as Speaker of the Cross River State House of Assembly remains the most prominent part of his political career, alongside his contributions to legal and community development in Abi and Cross River State.
