Biography of Senator Joel-Onowakpo Thomas

Senator Joel-Onowakpo Thomas is a Nigerian chartered accountant, businessman, and politician who represents Delta South Senatorial District in the 10th Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria. Born on 28 October 1969 in Ophorigbala, Olomu Kingdom, Ughelli South Local Government Area of Delta State, he is recognized for his extensive experience in finance, taxation, public administration, and legislative service.

Senator Joel-Onowakpo Thomas obtained his early education in Delta State before pursuing higher education in accounting and finance. He earned a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) degree in Accounting from the University of Ado-Ekiti (now Ekiti State University). He further enhanced his professional qualifications by obtaining a Master of Business Administration (MBA) and becoming a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN), as well as a member of other professional accounting and taxation bodies. His academic and professional training prepared him for a successful career in financial management and public finance.

Before entering partisan politics, Joel-Onowakpo Thomas built a distinguished career in Nigeria's financial and public sectors. He served in various capacities within the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), where he rose through the ranks and became a respected tax administrator. During his years at FIRS, he contributed significantly to tax policy implementation, revenue generation, and institutional reforms aimed at improving Nigeria's tax administration system. His expertise earned him recognition as an accomplished financial professional and public administrator.

His political career gained prominence when he contested the Delta South Senatorial District seat under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in the 2023 general elections. He emerged victorious and was inaugurated as a Senator of the Federal Republic of Nigeria on 13 June 2023, becoming a member of the 10th National Assembly.

As a senator, Joel-Onowakpo Thomas has focused on legislation and oversight in areas such as fiscal policy, economic development, infrastructure, education, youth empowerment, and community development.
