Hon. Bassey Joseph is a Nigerian politician and legislator from Cross River State. He was born on 7 October 1974 and represents the Calabar South/Akpabuyo/Bakassi Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives. He is a member of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
Bassey began his political career at the state level before moving into federal politics. He was elected to the Cross River State House of Assembly in 2019, where he represented Calabar South State Constituency and served until 2023. His time in the state legislature gave him experience in lawmaking and constituency representation.
In the 2023 general election, Bassey contested the Calabar South/Akpabuyo/Bakassi Federal Constituency seat on the platform of the APC and was elected to the House of Representatives. He subsequently became a member of the 10th National Assembly.
As a federal legislator, Bassey has been involved in legislative activities concerning infrastructure, emergency management, education, agriculture and regional development. He serves as Chairman of the House Committee on Emergency and Disaster Management, a role that places him in legislative oversight of issues relating to disaster preparedness and emergency response.
He has also sponsored bills focused on development in Cross River State, including proposals for a Federal University of Agriculture, a Federal College of Health Technology in Bakassi, a Federal Institute of Vocational and Technical Education in Calabar and a Federal College of Fisheries and Aquaculture in Ikang.
In October 2023, Bassey sponsored a motion calling for the commencement of Section V of the East-West Road linking Oron in Akwa Ibom State with Odukpani in Cross River State. The motion was adopted by the House and referred to the relevant committees for consideration.
Bassey has also maintained a constituency-focused approach to his legislative work, with attention to infrastructure and development needs across Calabar South, Akpabuyo and Bakassi. He has continued to engage with constituents and local stakeholders on issues affecting the federal constituency.
Bassey Joseph's political career spans state and federal legislative service. His transition from the Cross River State House of Assembly to the National Assembly has been accompanied by a focus on emergency management, infrastructure, education and development in Cross River State.
