Senator Adamu Aliero is a Nigerian politician, civil engineer, and public administrator who has served as a Senator representing Kebbi Central Senatorial District in the National Assembly. He is also a former Governor of Kebbi State and a former Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). His career spans engineering, local government administration, state governance, federal executive service, and legislative representation.
Adamu Aliero was born on 20 January 1957 in Aliero, Kebbi State. He received his early education in northern Nigeria before proceeding to Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria, where he studied Civil Engineering. His professional training in engineering provided the foundation for his early career in technical and public-sector administration.
Before entering elective politics, Aliero worked as a civil engineer and gained experience in construction, engineering, and public administration. He later became involved in local government administration and political activities in Kebbi State, gradually building a reputation as a grassroots political leader.
His political career became prominent when he served as Chairman of Aliero Local Government Area. His experience at the local-government level provided him with direct exposure to grassroots governance and the developmental challenges faced by rural communities.
In the 1999 general elections, Adamu Aliero was elected Governor of Kebbi State under the platform of the All People's Party (APP), which later became the All Nigeria Peoples Party (ANPP). He served as governor from 1999 to 2007, completing two terms in office.
During his tenure as governor, his administration focused on education, healthcare, agriculture, infrastructure, water supply, and rural development. He also pursued programmes aimed at improving public institutions and expanding economic opportunities for residents of Kebbi State.
After completing his tenure as governor in 2007, Aliero moved into federal politics and public administration. He was appointed Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) by President Umaru Musa Yar'Adua in 2008. As FCT Minister, he was responsible for overseeing the administration and development of Abuja, including infrastructure, urban planning, transportation, housing, and other public services.
In the 2011 general elections, Aliero was elected to the Senate of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, representing Kebbi Central Senatorial District. He has participated in legislative debates, committee activities, and oversight responsibilities relating to national development and public policy.
During his time in the Senate, he has been involved in discussions and legislative initiatives concerning infrastructure, education, agriculture, economic development, security, public finance, and governance. His experience as a former governor and federal minister has also provided him with extensive knowledge of government administration and policymaking.
Beyond his legislative responsibilities, Senator Adamu Aliero has maintained strong connections with communities in Kebbi State. His political activities have included supporting initiatives related to education, youth empowerment, agriculture, healthcare, and community development.
